The Toy Story 2 rerelease of the toy revises the doll yet again. Promotional image taken in the early 2000's of the 1996 Woody doll to promote merchandise for Toy Story and Beyond Toy Story 2 Talking Woody (1999) This revision also removes the spurs on the boots, though this may be an unintentional manufacturing error, as the square pegs the spur pieces in the original release would typically fit into are present. The first revision of the initial release, this Woody removes both the wired armature and the smaller pull string ring of its predecessor, most likely due to safety and choking hazard concerns. Promotional Image for the 1995 Woody Non-Poseable Talking Woody (1996) This Woody doll runs on an electronic pull-string mechanism, whose phrases were used in a majority of subsequent rereleases and revisions. The first edition of this Woody doll is also notable for being the only real life version of the doll to have a pull string ring closer to the size of Woody's in the films, but was likely changed for safety reasons. The doll is voiced by Jim Hanks (Tom Hanks' brother) rather than Tom Hanks. This release also exchanges the movie version's ragdoll type floppiness for a poseable wired armature. The very first pull-string doll featured a removable plastic hat with a faded brim. Prototype Buzz Lightyear in box Poseable Talking Woody It is unknown what happened to these prototypes, although they are rumored to be either in the possession of John Lasseter or the staff at Thinkway Toys, given away, lost, or destroyed. He also has a slightly different head, white wings instead of purple, and lacks stickers. For Buzz, his fingertips and knuckles are painted purple as in the film. ![]() These prototypes even have some notable changes: for Woody he has a smaller pull string ring like the film as apposed to being bigger in the released version, and has a different head and hat sculpt. In April 2020, an Instagram user, Harry_Tricks_3D, found a full photo of the original prototypes on the back of a coupon from the original Toy Story soundtrack. ![]() ![]() Very little information is known about them and there are hardly any pictures of them. Sometime after February 1995, Thinkway Toys made prototype versions of the characters before making the actual toys to sell to the public.
